Honoring The Past, Committing to Our Future - Capital Campaign

Writer: First Church StaffFirst Church Staff

I support the capital campaign because the church has always been there for me in good times and in difficult times.  I want the church to be an inviting space for others so they can experience what I experience.

                                                                     -Todd Brown, Trustee member

Why “Honoring the Past, Committing to Our Future”?

Our present church building was constructed in 1929, right at the beginning of the Great Depression.  Members of First Church were committed to a new space that would be built on land donated by the Simmons Family.  A move from the, then current building on Library Square is filled with memories of children proudly carrying their Sunday School chairs from the old building to the new building and of adults carrying the religious symbols to the new space.  In addition to the ways in which everyone made the journey to a new church home, five families were willing to mortgage their homes so that the church building mortgage would be paid during this difficult time in our country.  They left us a rich past to honor.

We are at a time when we pick up the mantle of First Church ministry and the building that has been given to us.  It is our time to commit to our future and care for  large maintenance projects needing our attention.  It is an exciting time to think about our legacy for those who are coming and will continue to be Christ’s witness on the corner of 60th and Sheridan.

Be sure to participate in different ways to hear more about the priorities of the campaign and how you can be a part of it.  Several planned opportunities are listed in this e-newsletter.  You are encouraged and invited to attend whether you are a member or guest of our congregation.
