Exploring Venice, A Day of Beauty and Reflection on the FC Italy Trip

“Byzantine mosaic of Christ and two saints above a doorway inside a dimly lit cathedral interior.”

Study Travel to Italy Day 2

Scripture: Read Matthew 25.31-46

We spent the day in Venice.  Venice is a beautiful place made up of 118 islands and 483 bridges.   After a morning walking tour, we toured San Marco Cathedral, or St. Mark’s Cathedral named after the disciple/gospel writer.  Mark is the patron protector over Venice.

Inside the cathedral are thousands of gold mosaics. One of the mosaics caught my attention. The one that is attached to this devotion is above the door as people exit the cathedral.  People are to be reminded that when Christ comes again, he will judge the sheep and the goats.  Thus, as we leave worship we are to remember the teachings of Christ and to live them out each day in the world.  The mosaic , in this location, is a simple, powerful reminder of our call as Jesus’s disciples nudges us in our desire and ability to live in the ways he taught us.  Reflect on some of the symbols in your path that remind you to live as Christ’s disciple today.

Prayer:

O God, we are grateful for the many ways Jesus’ teachings are expressed in our world.  May they be, for us, reminders of the ways we want to live out our faith in this world.  Amen.
