Program Cover, Passion Play
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
John 1:1-2, 4-5 NIV
Today began with a beautiful early morning walk with a few before breakfast. The first stop was the Benedictine Monastery in Ettal. Here, Dietrich Bonhoeffer preached and spent time working on a few of his books. Bonhoeffer is known for being executed by Hitler for his allegiance to the Christian faith and not to Hitler.
These experiences led us to the Passion Play in Oberammergau. The play is just over 6 hours in length. There is a 3 hour break for dinner. We are assigned a restaurant for dinner. The residents of Oberammergau who are in the play are the wait staff and shop keepers, etc of the Village. Our waiter at the restaurant was the apostle John. This I used the scripture for today from his gospel.
The resurrection scene begins with the angel bringing light into the darkness at the tomb. The women come to the tomb to encounter the angel and hear the good news, which they in turn share with others . The light of the risen Christ is spread. We are reminded of John’s words that the darkness in our lives and the world can never take away the light. We are also reminded that we are to be witnesses and sharers of that light.
Prayer. Creator God, than you for bringing the light into our lives and world. May it always illuminate our paths and our ways. Amen.
Pastor Susan Patterson-Sumwalt
